The Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the main Islamic attractions of the city. The construction of this unique architectural masterpiece was started in 1996 and ended only in 2007. Designers and suppliers of building materials from different parts of the world (India, China, Iran, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy and Morocco) were invited for the construction of this magnificent mosque. The mosque became opened for visitors in 2008. Both Muslims and representatives of other faiths can visit the mosque.
The building strikes by its luxury and large-scale grandeur. The total area of the mosque is more than 22 thousand square meters, of which 17 thousand square meters belong to the area of the peribolus.
Initially, it was planned to build the mosque in the Moroccan architectural style. However, some changes were made during its erection, thus, the outer walls of the Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque were created in a traditional Turkish style.
The precious (gold) and semi-precious materials, marble, ceramics, natural stone and rhinestone were used during the construction to preserve the original architectural appearance of the building and its decoration. The main dome of the mosque has the diameter of 32.7 m. Its height in the inner part is 7 m, and outside is 85 m. There are 1192 colons in total, which belong to the building (1096 outside, 96 in the main prayer hall).
The luxury of the interior of the mosque is not less striking. In the main prayer hall, you can see an immensely beautiful chandelier, which due to its size was included in the Guinness Book of records. The diameter of this huge downlight made of Swarovski crystals is 10 m, its total weight is 12 tons and the height is 15 m. The prayer hall of the mosque can accommodate 9 thousand believers at the same time. In one of the prayer halls of the mosque, visitors can also see the carpet, which is the hugest on the planet one: its total area is 5 thousand sq. m; and its weight is 47 tons.
Today, the Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the largest mosques in the world and the biggest mosque in the UAE.
