Tourist Attractions in Sydney

Located on the Pacific Ocean, Sydney is the administrative and cultural center of New South Wales, the oldest city in Australia.

The 26th of January 1788 is the date of foundation of the city. It is celebrated as Australia Day, which is connected to very interesting and dramatic events. On this day, after a nine-month voyage, the convoy of eleven English ships led by captain Arthur Phillips arrived to the shores of Australia for the establishment of a settlement. There were 1,350 prisoners on board, including women and children. In the late 18th century, Britain faced a serious problem of over-incarceration. Lord Sydney, the Minister of Internal Affairs, came up with the idea to solve this problem by sending convicts to newly discovered Australia. Thus, it got its first European residents, and the city grew on the site of the first settlement named in honor of the Minister and innovator.

For more than 200 years of its existence, Sydney has turned into a big modern city with the population of over four million people. In 2000, the city was the venue for the International Olympic Games.

The huge number of sights attracts tourists from all over the world. There is the Royal Botanical Garden possessing a rich collection of plants, species of flora from Australia and all over the world. The beautiful and modern building of the city Opera is one of the symbols of Sydney. The House of Queen Victoria, which is the mall astounding in its scope and design under a huge glass dome.

There is also the Aquarium of Sydney, which is one of the largest in the world. It has a variety of exotic, unexpected denizens of the ocean's depths. The Taronga zoo is a home for representatives of Australian fauna such as kangaroos, Koala, Dingo, platypus.

Beautifully located, cozy beaches Bondi and Manly are favorite vacation places for both locals and tourists. TV tower, reaching the height of 305 meters, with its restaurants and viewing platforms also attracts visitors.
