Kilmainham Gaol Tourist Attraction

Kilmainham Gaol

Native: Príosún Chill Mhaighneann

Kilmainham Gaol is the largest former prison in Europe that covers some of the most tragic events in Irish history. Kilmainham Gaol is located in Dublin and attracts a great number of the city visitors every year.  Built in 1796, the prison was referred to as the ‘New Gaol’ to distinguish it from the already existing old gaol. Back at that time, men, women and children were all put together up to 5 people in each cell in severe conditions, cold and darkness. The youngest prisoner is believed to be a 5 years old child arrested for theft. Later, during the Irish war of Independence and Irish Civil War, the prison served as the place for tortures and executions of many Irish leaders. Since that time, Kilmainham Gaol has been one of the most important Irish monuments related to the struggle for Irish independence. A lot of films have been filmed at the site.
