Rome is the capital of Italy. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and the ancient capital of the Roman Empire. Rome is the political and economic center. It is located on 7 hills, near the Mediterranean Sea, on both banks of the Tiber river.
Summer in Rome is long and hot with an average temperature of +25 °C, there is almost no precipitation. The average temperature in Rome in winter is +5 °C. The climate is mild in winter with almost no frosts and snowfalls.
In Rome, you can see the Imperial palaces on the Palatine hill, the temples in the Forum, the Ara Pacis of Augustus, the gigantic thermae of Diocletian, the Pantheon, the catacombs, the Coliseum, where gladiator fights and performances were held.
Rome is the center of the Christian world. It is known for its churches and basilicas (there are more than 900 of them). The most famous of them is San Giovanni in Laterano (this is the papal Church, since the Pope is also the Bishop of Rome), Santa Maria Maggiore and San Lorenzo fu ori Le Mura. Among the other churches, which tourists like to visit, one can pick out Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, San Luigi dei Francesi, Santa Maria del Popolo and Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where brave ones can push their hands into the “Voss della Verita” (the mouth of truth).
There are many art galleries, such as Galleria Borghese, Palazzo Doria Pamphili, the museums of the Capitol, the National Museum of the thermae, the National gallery of ancient art.
There are dozens of fountains in shaded squares among many monuments of Rome. Tourists tired of sightseeing can drink a cup of cappuccino and relax to the strains of water there. There are two metro lines, six tram lines and many bus routes. The whole urban public transport belongs to one company, so one ticket can be valid for all means of transport.
Antiques are sold in the streets close to Piazza Navona and Via dei Sagopa. Expensive fashion clothes are mostly sold in shops around the Spanish steps and Via Condotti, less expensive clothing -on Via del Corso and Via Frattina; second hand clothes – on Via del Governo Vecchio. There is a particularly good market at Campa de Fiori.
