The Central Park in New York is one of the largest and most famous parks in the world. The Park is located on the island Manhattan between the 59th and the 110th streets and the Fifth and the Eighth avenues. It has a rectangular shape. The length of the Park is 4 kilometers, its width is 800 meters, the total area of the Park is 3.4 km2. The Park is visited by approximately 25 million people a year. It is the most visited Park in the United States.
The project of the Park was designed by architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The latest founded the great Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Even though the Park looks very natural, almost all its landscapes were created manually. The Central Park has several artificial lakes, many avenues, two skating-rinks, the corners of pristine wilderness and lawns used for sports, playgrounds for kids and its own zoo. Migratory birds fly to the Park. Therefore, it is very popular among lovers of birds. The 10-kilometer road surrounding the Park is often used by runners, cyclists and lovers of roller skates, especially on weekends and after 7 pm, when automobile traffic in the Park is prohibited. The restoration of the Park was conducted in the 80-ies of the 20th century.
The crime rate of the Park is lower than in other parts of New York. Hundreds of police officers keep order in the Park every day.
The majority of visitors to the Park are families. The Northern part of the Park with lovely gardens and ponds is a peaceful place. It is more suitable for elderly people, lovers of peace and tranquility. The Park also offers rental bikes and boats.
