Palace of Versailles

Native: Château de Versailles

Palace of Versailles can be considered as the symbol of the absolute monarchy of Louis XIV. According to legend, the young king decided to build a new palace outside of Paris, because it was unsafe in the Louvre. And in 1661 in Versailles city Louis began the transformation of a modest hunting lodge into a sparkling palace. It was necessary to dry more than 800 hectares of swamps for this.
Palace of Versailles served as the political center of France. It became home for 6000 courtiers. Louis XIV created a place where the aristocracy could live under his watchful eye. A huge size of the Palace and its wealth demonstrated the absolute power of the monarch. About 30,000 workers and 25 million livres were taken on the construction of the palace, that was 10 500 tons of silver in the general account. Today, this amount is equal to 259.56 billion euros.
