Machu Picchu Tourist Attraction

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a 15th century Incan site located in the Cusco Region in Peru, South America. It is believed that Machu Picchu was built by Pachacuti, the ninth ruler of the Incas in 1400s. The site is located 2 430 meters above sea level on the eastern slope of the Andes and was discovered by explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911 while he was looking for the last capital of the Incas. The site was abandoned by the Incas one century after it was built probably as a result of the Spanish Conquest. Machu Picchu was built with polished dry-stone walls. The ruins are divided into two main sections and the primary structures include Hitching Post of the Sun, the Temple of the Sun and the Room of the Three Windows. Today, most of the buildings are being reconstructed to give visitors a better idea what the place used to look like. Many theorists have proclaimed different ideas about the origin of the site and its location. The City of Incas was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is highly popular among visitors.
