Leaning Tower of Pisa Tourist Attraction

Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a campanile that is one of the four buildings located at Piazza dei Miracoli, Pisa. The construction of the tower began in 1173 and continued for about 200 years. The name of the architect is a mystery upon today. The Tower of Pisa has eight stories and is made of white marble. With 207 columns ranged around the stories, the tower is a miracle of medieval engineering and looks like a wedding cake. The tower began to sink already in 1178 right after the construction of the second floor had progressed. This happened due to the fact that the foundation was set in unstable ground. Later, in an effort to compensate the tilt, the engineers built upper floors with one side taller than the other. Nowadays the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is about 17 feet off the vertical, which makes this building one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. Today, the Tower of Pisa is open for the public who are welcome to climb 296 steps and enjoy the view.
