El Morado Natural Monument is one of the most beautiful places in Central Chile. It does not take much time to go there from the center of Santiago: an hour and a half by an asphalt road and then another 30-40 minutes by unsealed road. It is a popular place with the magical effect of attraction of everyone due to the ability to completely disconnect from the urban bustle and enjoy the pristine silence of the mountains. It is close to Chile's capital (can be reached even by bus). The air is clean. In General, it is a natural treasure.
El Morado is located in the famous canyon, the Cajón del Maipo. It is a wonderful place for trekking. The trail runs along a narrow valley, so for all 5-6 hours of trekking, you are surrounded by mountains from both sides. If translated literally, “Monumento” means "natural monument". The nature conservation organization Conaf, which manages El Morado chose this word to refer to the status of this natural object.
The main attraction of the Monumento Natural El Morado is a small glacier San Francisco, which awaits travellers at the end of the trek, at a distance of 8 km from the start. 2 km on the to the glacier, you meet the Laguna Morales, a small water reservoir of a malachite color where you can see ducks. Having overcome the first 20 minutes of a dramatic sloping rise, which might be somewhat alert, you can breathe a sigh of relief, relax and enjoy the beautiful views.
In the beginning of the road, you leave behind the King-Mountain, which is a ridge with colorful splashes of orange. The unusual formation looking like a glacier tongue, only in orange color descends to the foot of the mountains. Fragments of orange and brick red are found in small channels on the right side. The effect is unusual, and it is due to the fact that lot of minerals in high concentrations lie in these areas. In fact, the name given to these colorful waters – Aguas Panimávida – belongs to these mineral springs.
The Maipo valley ends by volcanoes San Jose (5856) and Marmolejo (6108).
