If you come to Chile, you must visit the Municipal Theatre of Santiago. Enjoy its grandeur and beauty, view the performances of its famous ballet company or listen to a philharmonic orchestra, a performance of violinists or pianists.
The opening of the theatre in 1857 became the major event in the theatrical life of Santiago with the presentation of "Ernani" by Giuseppe Verdi. Famous opera and ballet artists, such as Luciano Pavarotti and Julio Boca, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Placido Domingo performed on its stage.
You can see both classical and modern performances of the Chilean national ballet such as "Giselle" by Adolphe Adam, "Greek" Zorba and "the Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky. Enjoy staging of well-known operas, including "Otello" by Verdi, "the Magic flute" by Mozart and "the Puritans" by Bellini. The philharmonic orchestra of Santiago takes part in the opera and ballet performances, and also gives its own concerts.
Other events happening at the Theatre include piano concerts, operas and ballets, especially created for children. For example, a production of "Steadfast tin soldier" by Hans Christian Andersen, "Hansel and Gretel" by the brothers Grimm.
Over the past 150 years, the theater came through the earthquake of 1906 with great destruction of the internal part of the building and two serious fires. After reconstruction, the visitor capacity of the theatre was reduced to 1500 spectators in the main hall. However, its interior became more luxurious.
Rate the architecture of this theatre, its neoclassic facade, designed by the French architect Claudio Francisco Brunet de Baines. Enjoy the decorative columns of the interior, elegant arches, marble floors and velvet upholstered chairs in the lobby. The Municipal Theatre of Santiago is located in Santiago's historical center, a short walk from the Plaza de Armas. The shows and performances at the theater take place all year round. Its ballet and opera performances can be viewed from April to December and from May to November.
In 1974, the Municipal Theatre of Santiago was declared a national monument of Chile.
