New York, which is often called "the Big Apple", is a business, political and cultural center of the United States. The city is located on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in the southeastern part of the state New York. The city was founded in 1624 by Dutch colonists and was named New Amsterdam. In 1664 the city was captured by the British and renamed into New York in honor of the initiator of the seizure, Duke of York.
The city consists of five municipal boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island.
New York has a subtropical oceanic climate. Summers are hot and sunny, and the temperature often surpasses +30. Winters are pretty cool, but short. Snowfalls are frequent, but not abundant. The thermometer usually ranges from -3 to +6. Springs and autumns are warm and comfortable.
There are two airports in New York: the airport of Kennedy (JFK) and LaGuardia airport (LGA). Public means of transport include metro, city buses, taxis, cable cars leading to the island of Roosevelt and the ferry to Staten Island.
Skyscrapers are the basis of modern architecture of New York city and are its main attractions (the Empire state building, the Chrysler building). The main sights of New York are located in Manhattan: the Rockefeller Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Opera, the American Museum of Natural History, the UN headquarters and Harlem. The Statue of Liberty is located about 3 km southwest of the southern tip of Manhattan on Liberty Island.
