Mount Rushmore National Memorial located near the city of Keystone in South Dakota is reckoned among the top tourist attractions. The main highlight of this sightseeing spot is the 60-foot (18 m) long sculptures of the heads of four erstwhile presidents of the United States including Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. The sculptures are etched into the granite surface of Mount Rushmore. These sculptures were done by a Danish-American father-son pair Gutzon Borglum and Lincoln Borglum.
Apart from sculptures, this place is known for its rich diversity of flora and fauna. Here, a tourist can sight various bird and animal species including turkey vulture, hawk, bald eagle, woodpeckers, beaver, badger, coyote, raccoon, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, etc. At lower heights, Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills spruce, bur oak, and the cottonwood among other plant species can also be spotted.
The entire memorial is spread over 1,278.45 acres (5.17 km2). It is located 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. In this region, the tallest mountain is Harney Peak. The height of Harney Peak is 7,242 ft (2,207 m). Today, this famous monument is often depicted in films, media and popular culture. Owing to this, its popularity in travel guide has also increased. 3 million people come here each year, a great part of visitorscome to the area during the week of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
