Burano Tourist Attraction

Burano is an island in the Venetian Lagoon located 7kilometers from Venice which is easily accessible by a water bus. Although it is usually referred to as an island, Burano is actually an archipelago of several islands connected by bridges. The population of the island is no more than 3000 people. It is mostly known for its colourful houses. A legend narrates that fishermen used to paint their houses to see the island from far away. The colours follow a system developed many years ago. If a local family wants to paint their house the government decides which colour is appropriate for that location. Tourists are alsowelcome to have a look at the Church of San Martino and the Museum of Lacemaking. The origins of lacemaking date from the 16th century, when local women started to make lace with needles. Today visitors can buy lace at reduces prices.
