The Basilica of St Mary of Health (Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute) is one of the largest churches located in Venice, Italy. The church is visible while entering the Piazza San Marco from the water and is one of the top tourist attractions worth visiting in the city of Venice. The Basilica of St Mary of Health is a great example of Baroque architecture and was built between 1631 and 1687. In 1630 the Venetian Senate decided that a new church should be built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary as by that time an outbreak of plague had killed a great number of the locals. The statue of the Virgin Mary is located on the top of the building, while the façade is decorated with the statues of saints. The interior design is rich and outstanding, visitors will notice that it is full of Marian symbolism. The Senate would visit the church each year on November 21 parading from San Marco to the Basilica for a service in gratitude for deliverance from the Black Death.
